1970s NEWPORT
The late 1960s and early 1970s saw the first major redevelopments of the Town centre. Shaftesbury Street, Upper Dock Street and the Old Green Crossing were just some of the familier names to be changed forever. Hideous multi story car parks appeared and an equally hideous Olympia house stood like a great cyst amongs the wonderful Victorian style architecture, of which Newportonians were once immensly proud .
The Castle, one of few in the country which sported a water gate, underwent a steady programme of willful destruction. Great pieces dissapeared for the sake of new roads and supposed progress. Here we look at that period with fondness remembering that some of us are very fortunate to recal it as it was.
