A Christmas Carrot - set in Victorian Baneswell or it could have been New York or Merthyr Tydfil - the play is focused around the impoverished Scratchit Family and their mean tight assed boss Ebony Sneezer Scrooge, who delights in starving the family into a life of submissive service to the Scrooge Empire. Scrooge, having given Scratchit senior 30 seconds from his duties to celebrate Christmas, is visited by three ghosts. The ghosts of benefit past, present and the future. To the tune of Sneezer the red nosed miser, Ebony has the pants frightened off him and at last sees the way forward, thus entering the human race. The ghosts, supported throughout by Tall John Silver (Lampey Lovett) , Pussy in Boots (Terry Thomas) and the two good fairies (Roger Boswell and Ann Gribble) create a wonderful environment, where the ubiquitious GIRO flows freely to all. Amazing how things come to pass!
The Christmas Carrot pantomime has become legendry, amongst those sober enough to remember it. It was a great night for the hosts Roger and Diane. The three bars of the Engineers were packed to bursting. A video relay was set up for those who could not get a ring side seat. The door of the star dressing room (the gent's bog) has been preserved in a secret vault for posterity. Best place for it. Not a single parking place was to be found in the area. The brewery directors, VIP guests, could not get through the door.
Home spun entertainment at its best and three months of sheer fun and laughter with wonderful people.
