  1. Hi, I`ve just spent a very happy, nostalgic hour, looking through your wonderful website! I visited the Heritage centre more than a few times, shame it had to close. Most of my family originally came from Pill. The Mains Fred and Lizzie, from 3?Charlotte Street, and Portland Street, were my great Grandparents. My Great Grandfathet John Webb owned a grocery shop in Castle Street after moving from Proterio Row with loads of kids! My mother lived in 43 Alma Street with Grace and Cliff Webb until 1939. I`d love any information on any of these people if known. Keep up the good work ,you have done a fantastic job!

  2. Hello

I'm trying to get in touch with any member of the Pitman family or related families with a veiw to expanding my family tree. Any help would be appriciated. Also ex members of the life boys or boys brigade based at Alexandra Baptist hall during the mid to late fifties.

    Cheers

    John Pitman

  3. Does anybody know anything about a Captain Henry Mathias of the ship the "Usk" and the legend that in March 1860 he saved the ship and it's crew because he had a vision that told him that he had to turn back. This was later proved to be true!

He lived in the area, the ship left Newport and I'm a relative of his.

    Thanks, fingers crossed!!

  4. Hi Jan,

What a great website; full of facts and wonderful pictures. I'm currently researching my family tree. My Grandmother (Eileen Davies), my Great Aunt (Doris Davies), Great Grandmother (Lily Fitzgerald) and Great Grandfather (Edward Fitzgerald, a dock labourer) came from the area; living at 8 Reform Buildings (1901 census) and 11 Raglan Street (1909). I'm finding it really hard to find out info or photos about the area. Can anybody help me?

    Keep up the good work.

    Nigel Morris

  5. took me back to when i wasnt born yet and dad was in the Interns, so funny but great

  6. Wonderful memories , thank you for sharing them. I used to go to a litle shop in Alma Street near the brewery, with my Grandmother. It was middle of terrace in a small front room, she shopped theire for many years. Perhaps this was the one. I cant recall the ladies name.? Mrs Coles maybe? I remember all of the names you mentioned, how wonderful to hear from you. Thank you again.

    Jan

  7. My name is Brian Richards and I was born at 61 Alma Street in June 1944.at the Strawbridges House. We had an Andrews next door and a Jones between us and the church. My Nan ran a little shop 50 yards down the road from the brewery, Mitchels and Butlers I think it was. My uncle Ned Netherway ran a butchers shop at the end of Bolt street and my Nan lived over the Australian Boot shop

  8. Hi all,

    What a brilliant website!

Does anyone have any pics of other local bands from the 60's & 70's. Bands such as the hollymen, sugar rode, oswald orange ,pandoras box & others.

    Regards Rob.

  10. Just found your site........

dad worked for burt boultons and wynns grandad was a train driver during the war i would love to see more photos of pill during the war and also burt boultons.

  12. Hi, I loved the Ken and was mainly a Thursday night regular to see the bands from '72 - '75.

A few of my mates, also Ken regulars, were in the local (Newport) band Heckta (had been Hector but had to change when we discovered another band with that name). I think they might have been the last band to play there in January 1975. It was my birthday bash, and by then the council had installed one of those sound meter monitors that cut the electricity to the stage if the sound exceeded a set limit of decibels. So rather a subdued set. Later the council revoked the drinks licence and that really killed off the Ken.

I'd love to hear from any other regulars from those days. I left Newport in '85 and am now living just outside Liverpool.

    Cheers,

    Bill

  13. Hi Kay

Good to hear from you, which photo please?

I was at the Ken the first night it opened as a casino. Many nights there after.I lived in St.Johns Rd.I had Annes Bistro down stairs, and then it went over to Mary.I have photos but how do I pass them on?The photos with Pan People look as if they were at the Mount S.Albans(not the Ken),but memory can play up!! Remember Amen Corner up there? Is Ricky still alive. Hi Gail how are you?I will never forget the Ken,for many reasons. Can anyone remember me? xxxxxxps Little Icka=please get in touch>

  17. Hi,

I've just seen Kim's comment. Your grandfather may have know mine - Lionel Walter Long - who was a tug boat skipper. He lived in Rugby Road.

  18. Well great memories of the Kensington I have, my second home from the mid 1960's to 1970 when I got married after meeting my wife there.

Still got my Ken membership card and the amount of people that used to get in on a night, in through the front door, out to the gents toilets and pushed through the gap between the two exit doors to the next chap outside and so on!!

I used o drive a Morris JR van that was covered in some sort of writing and cartoon characters and was usually seen in the car park of the Ken or outside the Globe Inn in Llanarth Street.

Glad vehicles don't have memories because that could have hung me a million times, LOL!!

  19. Hi. Remember Ken well. Went to school in Father Hills. Great days. Still married to girl I met at the Ken. have family and now live in Cwmbran. Worked with Mervyn Thomas in the mid 70's at Girlings New Inn. We became friends with Mervyn and Jackie and lost contact when they split. Do not know where Jackie and Kirsty live now, but sadly Mervyn passed away. Anybody remember us?

  20. Hi Hazel

Duncan Brown of Raglan Street, remembers them both.

    Cheers

  21. does anyone remember merv thomas and jacki cronk?

  22. Thank You Gail

They were great years, so little to think about and so much fun to be had, glad you enjoyed looking I will add to it as soon as I can. We had lots of great entertainers and singers in Newport I would like to feature them all eventually. Must keep the Newport thing going it's our town!

  23. I have just been sent the kensington court club. Yes I am there with of course Ricky king. (my husband at the time. The sad part is in the photo is my sister anita, chris and gary our brother. Gary passed away 44 and then my sister 55. I was chris (ika) who told his son and then he rang me. Having lived in the Kensington court club just after ginna, and of course lovely marylin. THANK YOU for the memory of it. As we all know the kensington was the place for years.

  24. Thank you kim, I would love to hear your story in more detail and publish it on the site. This is exactly what Pill people and their Heritage is all about. Thank you so much for your interest.

    Jan

  25. Excellant site. I have been researching the history of the area and my family for many years and just love the dedication that you have for this site. My family were the Jefferys who came over to Pill from Guernsey in the late 1800s. My grandfather was a Channel Pilot and my Great Grandfather gave up the sea to open a Hairdressers and tobacconist on Alexander road. Number 88. We have a lovely photo of his shop hanging on the wall taken around 1910 possibly. The family also lived in Brunel Street and generations down the line the family is still there!

Please keep up the good work.

    Kim

I'm looking for a bit of help. I have discovered that my great-aunt was married to Reuben Pashilinsky in 1912.
