Pill 1974 The Peoples Carnival
1974 – The year Pill fought back. Bulldozers moved street by street, reducing homes and lives to dust. Uncaring beaurocrats wiped away generations of history with the cold movement of a pen, erasing a whole community, upon which today’s Newport was founded. This proud area had been declared a slum. Condemned by those lacking vision and imagination, an embryonic egg box community was being created. Rows of terraced housing, some rented others owned were condemned. While in the shadows plans were a foot to re house what remained of this upstanding community in cell like warrens , which lacked soul and any resemblance to the tried and tested lifestyle of the previous 150 years. Pill, however was not going to lay back and be forgotten. It held a Carnival, a Peoples Carnival which sent out a positive message to those prepared to commit Pill to the pages of History. This carnival and happily Pill, has stood the test of time . Many of those who generated this phenomenal community spirit are no longer with us. These images are a tribute to those who led this initiative.
